Aristolochia ringens“Gaping Dutchmans Pipe”
Aristolochias are a fun and easy plant to grow,
the flowers are among the largest of all species of Central America and are among the largest flowers in the world (24 inches across or even more!). The flower goes through a cycle of fertilization of several days that initially attracts flies inside the flower, having them trapped there for a day and then released again, almost as if it was a carnivorous plant!
Aristolochia ringens
is a tropical vine plant. This variety, native from Costa Rica's Central Valley grows happily more than 10m, but starts making eerie hairy flowers at just 3m from the base. They love full sun, but may have a little shade, which makes them have less flowers, it has heart shaped leaves of a light green color and likes high soil humidity.
Culture:
sow the seeds 1–2 in. deep, on a group of 1 to 3 seeds on individual pots. Loose, well-drained soil is very important for good germination, but the plants won’t mind growing even on clay soils, a soil pH of 5–6 will give the best results. Seeds will take from a month to 2 to germinate. Plant a month after last frost once soil has warmed up, or in tropical regions, any time of the year. It may be grown outdoors in zones (USA 9-11) or indoors in a greenhouse. The plant may make flowers after some 6-8 months of growth depending on the conditions.
