Louis Froelich emigrated from Bavaria in early 1861, settled in Wilmington, NC, ran a button factory and then moved into sword manufacture for the Confederacy. His factory burned down so he moved his operation to Kenansville North Carolina for safety, only to have that facility burned by the Yankees, so he then rebuilt and continued making sabers, sword bayonets, pikes, knives, axes, accouterments and other needed supplies for the CSA. This is the standard Froelich-made enlisted cavalry saber, patterned on a the German and US 1840 models, but with a flaring conical pommel, a guard that features two branches coming from the knucklebow at two different spots, and a brown wrapped grip that is bound with a single wire strand. The brass has nice mellow, untouched age patina. The blade has the typical Kenansville rounded back and single unstopped fuller. The blade is generally gray in color mixed with darker gray spots. Scabbard exhibits classic crude lapped seam and crude brass ring mounts.
