    HIGH GRADE SAUERBIER MADE OFFICERS SWORD PRESENTED TO "CAPT. CHARLES HUNSDON
    A VERY HIGH GRADE SAUERBIER MADE OFFICERS SWORD WITH A SILVER GRIP & HEAVY MOUNTS OF SILVER AND BRONZE PRESENTED TO "CAPT. CHARLES HUNSDON OF THE VT. 1ST HEAVY ARTILLERY BY THE MEN OF HIS CO." IN FINE UNTOUCHED CONDITION. THE SWORD HAS A FINE UNTOUCHED ETCHED BLADE WITH LOTS OF ORIGINAL FROSTING AND POLISH. IT IS MARKED "SAUERBIER" AT THE RICASSO. THERE IS A LARGE "U.S." ON ONE SIDE WITH FOILAGE AND MILITARY MOTIFS THROUGHOUT IT. THE SILVER GRIP IS UNTOUCHED. THE FANCY HEAVY BRASS GUARD IS FULLY CHISELED AND ENGRAVED THROUGHOUT WITH OVAL SILVER INLAYS IN THE POMMEL. THE HEAVY SCABBARD IS ALSO UNTOUCHED WITH HEAVY BRONZE FITTINGS WITH SILVER OVAL INLAYS IN BOTH MOUNTS AND THE DRAG. ABOVE THE TOP MOUNT IS A WONDERFUL INSCRIPTION IN FINE SCRIPT WHICH READS, "PRESENTED TO CAPT. CHARLES HUNSDON, CO. B, VT. 1TH ARTILLERY FROM THE MEMBERS OF HIS CO. AS A TOKEN OF THEIR CONTIDENCE AND ESTEEM JANY, 1863". CAPT HUNSDON ENLISTED ON 8/13/1862 & MUSTERED OUT ON 6/24/1865. HE WAS PROMOTED THREE TIMES AND MADE COLONEL IN 1865. HIS REGIMENT SAW HEAVY ACTION AT SPOTSYLVANIA COURT HOUSE, COLD HARBOR, PETERSBURG, WELDON RAILROAD, OPEQUAN VA, AND CEDAR CREEK. THE REGIMENT LOST 10 OFFICERS AND 154 MEN IN THESE BATTLES. THIS IS A VERY HIGH GRADE SAUERBIER OFFICERS SWORD WITH EXCELLENT CIVIL WAR HISTORY AND A WONDERFUL PRESENTATION TO CAPT. HUNSDON FROM HIS MEN!
